New to Fenton as of August, The Corner Bar & Grill is located at the corner of Jennings and Owen Road, tucked, as you may have guessed, in the corner of the Silver Chase Plaza. With such an unassuming name and location, I was not prepared for what was within. I had the opportunity to speak with owner, Justin Knight and was immediately struck by his friendliness and enthusiasm. Most of Knight’s experience in food service has been in Arizona and Colorado, but when deciding a new location, his wife, Elizabeth’s local roots is what brought them back to Michigan.
The location was updated with a classic Rock ‘N’ Roll theme, some signed memorabilia is displayed with more to come. The wood pallet bar and industrial filament bulb fixtures lend to the casual, inviting feel. The bar features a liquor cage and a very impressive selection of craft beers and a six tap lineup list. You will find a vast selection of
Pilsners, Lagers, IPA’s, Ciders, Amber Ales, Barleywines, Stouts, Porters, Belgians, and of course, domestics. Keep an eye out for announcements on future tap takeovers, based on the popularity of the Founders takeover in October. Drink specials change regularly.
When it comes to the menu, Justin stated it best with, “We are a bar with a chef.”
Chef Justin Trombley brings new concepts to favorite menu items. This is far from your common bar fare. Trombley uses handmade dressings, sauces and compound butters in many of the dishes offered.
Taking Knight’s suggestions, we started with the Parmesan Crusted Feta Dip. The dip is a light and airy mousse with a warm, savory flavor accented by the nuttiness of a parmesan crust and served with grilled pita, that just dares you to not finish every last bite. Other popular starters are the Krispy Brussel Sprouts, Ribeye Nachos and The Poutine Fries, smothered in gravy and cheese curds.
I tried the Black Sabbath Salmon with the Chef’s smoked Bleu Cheese compound butter and the best blackened crust I have experienced. The fish was moist and served over the perfect compliment of wild greens with pickled onions and housemade vinagarette.
I also sampled the CBG Steak Burger. This burger is served on an onion bun from local bakery, CRUST. Topped with grilled mushrooms, swiss, fried onions, and another amazing compound butter, this time Horseradish and black pepper. This incredible burger was accompanied by rosemary fries.
The food is nothing short of incredible with attention given to every detail in preparation and presentation. The lunch and dinner menu are the same with a separate brunch menu for the weekends, starting at 10am. Brunch features a Chicken and Waffle dish, Breakfast Burritos and Tacos, Pancakes, and two different Benedict preparations.
Also of note are the brunch drink specials; Spicy Bloody Buddy, and….I just had to try it…a Beermosa. Don’t judge, it was spectacular! I can only imagine how well it pairs with the Chicken and Waffles. I bet you are now curious enough to try it.
In addition to the best gastropub fare around, The Corner Bar offers live music on Saturday nights with local favorites such as Atomic Betty and Tye Dye Giants. Check Facebook for scheduled entertainment. Also keep an eye open, one Sunday each month features a Rock Brunch with live acoustic guitar.
