Meet Harrison Cypher, Athletic Programmer and Facility Scheduler for Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation

Where are you from Harrison?  I grew up in Fenton, Michigan and graduated from Fenton High School in 2011.Where did you graduate college from? I graduated from Central Michigan University in May of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management.  Sports has always been one of my passions. What inspired your love of athletics and recreation? I believe my love of athletics and recreation was developed while attending StateHarrison Cypher SLPR Athletic ProgrammerRoad elementary. During recess, my friends and I could always be found running around playing soccer, football, or basketball. Playing these sports introduced me to a lot of people that I am still currently friends with. These experiences paired with my experiences in sports growing up inspired me to want to work in athletics. What does an Athletic Program Administrator do? An athletic program administrator can be found doing a lot of various activities.  No two days are the same. A lot of what I do includes organizing fundraising activities with our marketing director, ordering equipment for teams, communicating with our athletic instructors, creating schedules, managing program budgets, creating and improving current athletic leagues, and handling registration for our  programs. You can also find me at sites where our programs are taking place to make sure everything is running smoothly. I find everything that I do to be enjoyable and you get to do a lot of activities outside in the summer months.  (Hint, hint…the Tour Des Lacs!  If you haven’t checked out the Tour Des Lacs yet, you need to this year! All bikers are welcome.)What are your hobbies? Hobbies of mine include playing soccer as well as coaching soccer in Brighton. I also enjoy spending time with my Golden Retriever, Duke! One of my new hobbies that I like to do is create my own hard cider. The entire process from harvesting the apples, grinding, pressing, and fermentation is fascinating to me. It is an art form in itself.  I have been learning from my grandfather who owned Hilltop Apple Orchard in Fenton and grew up creating cider for a living. What makes this job so rewarding and fun? The most enjoyment I get out of the job is being able to see how much fun people have while participating in athletics and recreation. Sports can teach you a lot about life and I enjoy seeing others learn life lessons and create new friendships. It is fun to be involved with athletics and recreation because there are always new programs taking off. Recently, those sports have included Lacrosse and Rugby. With the popularity and rise of new sports, you have to make sure that you are constantly learning about new trends. I am also fortunate to work with a staff that promotes creativity and allows me to branch out and try unique ideas.Do you still play sports as an adult? I still try to be involved with sports as much as possible. I like to get out and play pick up soccer, basketball, and football with friends in my spare time. What is your favorite spectator sport to watch? My favorite sport to watch would have to be hockey. I love going down to Joe Louis Arena to watch the Red Wings play, especially during the playoffs. I am disappointed that there is only one more year at the Joe. However, the new arena will be really cool and will certainly have a positive impact for the City of Detroit. If you could have any super power, what would it be? If I could have any super power it would be the ability to time travel, both to the past and to the future. Imagine going back in time to see some of your favorite bands play, or going back to hang out with the dinosaurs. Now imagine the future, flying cars, getting winning lottery ticket numbers, the possibilities are endless. The entire span of world history would be possible to visit –how cool!
