Dale Earnhardt Jr. climbed out of the number 8 Budweiser machine in victory lane after the night race in August of 2004 and uttered the phrase “It’s Bristol Baby.” Little did he know that the expression of joy at winning his first Cup race at the fabled track would become a slogan to identify the Bristol Motor Speedway.

Tough to Win at Bristol

Winning at the place where his father, Dale Sr., had so much success meant something special to Junior. Bristol’s 500 laps on the high banks of the half-mile speedway are run at speeds that leave minimal reaction time to avoid trouble. When a driver emerges from “The Last Great Colosseum” having conquered 39 other competitors for the win, it’s an extraordinary feeling. One of complete exhaustion offset by satisfaction in attaining one of the ultimate achievements in the sport.

Prior to this years night race. Bristol Motor Speedway unveiled a larger than life monument to those now immortal words. Thursday afternoon’s announcement paid tribute to Dale Jr.’s pending retirement. So closely is the expression tied to both Bristol Motor Speedway and Dale Jr. that fans immediately associate the two. Dale will run both races this weekend. Looking to repeat the sweep he accomplished in 2004.

The platform supporting the script serves as a place where fans can pose for pictures to commemorate their visit to the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Sitting street side in front of the Speedway, with the backdrop of the grandstands, it is certain to be a must have photo shot for race fan albums.

Ticket for both events at Bristol this weekend are still available. Pintys Qualifying for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Cars begins at 5:45 pm Friday. Followed by The Food City 300 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series at 7:30 pm.

Saturday, The Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race roars to life at 7:30 pm.
