Practice for the Folds of Honor 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway started with Noontime laps around the mile and a half track. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver’s got a feel for the track with the new competition rules package for 2018. Some surprises topped the leaderboard after the hour and 20-minute opening session.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.(17) posted the fastest speed, running 186.384 mph in his Ford Fusion. Darrell Wallace Jr.(43) ran third fastest at 185.834 mph. Wallace is hoping to prove last weeks second place finish in the Daytona 500 was no fluke.
Brad Keselowski(2) was 24th fastest, Austin Dillon(3) 28th, and Chase Elliott(9) 29th. All three running 4-5 mph slower than Stenhouse. Everyone will be looking for more speed prior to the 5:15 pm Cup qualifying runs.
