Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, CA — June 13, 2019

The best golfers on the globe teed off today in the 119th U.S. Open Championship. They tackled the iconic Pebble Beach links. Johnny Miller described the scenic views as “The greatest meeting of land and sea in the world.”

All that beauty and an incredible test of a golfer’s skill rolled into one. The folks who run the course describe it this way. “The greens at Pebble Beach average 3,500 square feet — the smallest on the PGA TOUR. They’re also surrounded by Stillwater Cove, an ocean breeze and more bunkers (117) than the Old Course at St. Andrews.”

On top of that, the USGA always toughens up the U.S. Open course with deep roughs and narrow fairways.

Who Passed the Test on Day 1

Justin Rose sits atop the leaderboard after shooting a 65. With the course playing to a par 71 for the tournament that translates to 6 under on the day. Rose’s round included an eagle on the Par 5 sixth hole, 5 birdies, and a bogey on the 8th.

Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Louis Oosthuizen, and Aaron Wise make up a foursome tied for 2nd at 5 under. Viktor Hovland is the low amateur after shooting a round of 69, 2 under par and just 3 strokes out of the lead.
