Making the most of the exemption that placed him in the Rocket Mortgage Classic as an alternate, Nate Lashley continues to lead the tournament after Round 2. A round of 67 gave Lashley a two-round total of 14 under par. Good enough for a single stroke lead over Cameron Champ. Who followed an opening day 66 with a 65 to post a score of 13 under par.
Charles Howell III sits 3rd at 12 under. Ryan Armour and J.T. Poston tied for 4th at 11 under. Poston shot the low round of the day, a 63, combined with his opening round 70 to move within three strokes of the lead.
Champ Takes Early Lead With Incredible Front Nine
Cameron Champ put everyone on notice early in the second round when he shot 28 on the front nine. His 8 under par score included six birdies and an eagle on the Par 5, 7th hole.
Asked to comment on the incredible run, Champ responded. “Yeah, it’s just one of those nines kind of everything went my way. I made a few putts I really wasn’t expecting to make. Then, yeah, I just kept it going. I wasn’t really thinking much. At that point, it’s just the hole looks a little bit bigger for a while, so you just try to make as many as you can and that’s what I did. And then I fought pretty good on the back side to keep it.”
Lashley Maintains Composure After a Slow Opening
Starting on the back nine Lashley birdied the first hole. But, he gave the stroke back with a bogey on the 2nd. Three straight pars left him even for the round after 5 holes. Fortunately, he got things going through the middle of the round with four birdies over six holes.
What was your reaction, if you had one, to Champ’s day before you played? “Well, I saw Cameron started 7 under through seven and I knew going into today that there was going to be a lot of guys pass me. I knew that. I just wanted to go out today and play well and hit some good solid shots and make some putts and play some comfortable golf out there. After a few holes, that’s what I felt like I did.”
Asked about his confidence at the start of round 2, Nate admitted to a case of the nerves. “Well, I was definitely a little nervous. You know, it’s not easy backing up a 63, so first few holes were a little iffy. Hit some bad putts early and then kind of settled in once I made a couple of putts and got my round rolling around 16, 17 and played the front nine
solid.”
Failing to Make the Cut
The cut line score was five below par. Chez Reavie, who started the day tied for 4th, shot a 78 and missed the cut. Fan favorites Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, and U.S. Open Champion Gary Woodland also failed to make the cut.
