Week 5 of the AP College Football Rankings released today held only a little solace for Michigan and Michigan State Fans. There was a change in the top 5 as Ohio State routed Miami of Ohio 76-5 and moved into 5th, passing Oklahoma who had the weekend off.

Wisconsin Sinks Michigan

The Badgers ran up 359 yards on Michigan’s defense and the Wolverines coughed the ball up 3 times in a 35-14 defeat that was not as close as the score might indicate. Unable to solve Wisconsin’s rushing attack saw Michigan’s chance of retaining a top 15 ranking disappear.

The Wolverines dropped to 20th in the rankings and can hopefully rebound next week against Rutgers. Coach Jim Harbaugh had no excuse for the performance. “We were outplayed, out-prepared and out-coached….Both offensively and defensively. It was thorough.”

Michigan State Claws its Way Back Into the Rankings

Michigan State rolled over Northwestern 31-10 as their offense found itself again. Quarterback Brian Lewerke threw for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns. While Running Back Elijah Collins ran for 76 yards and a touchdown of his own.

The Spartans re-entered the rankings in 25th place. Next week Michigan State takes on Indiana with a chance to impress the voters again. They need to make sure their offense shows up two weeks in a row or the chance of being a Top 25 team may disappear permanently.

Mark Dantonio became the winningest coach in MSU football history with 110 victories, passing the legendary Duffy Daugherty.
