The Top 5 in this week’s College Football Rankings remain virtually the same. Michigan and Michigan State make moves in the standings, good and bad.
Michigan State Spartans
In their biggest test of the season, Michigan State headed to Columbus to take on the 4th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Spartans fumbled twice in the first five minutes of the game, but their defense rose to the occasion and held the Buckeyes to just a field goal in the open quarter.

The Ohio State offense began to cook in the second quarter as they scored three touchdowns and added another field goal. Michigan State responded quickly to the first Buckeye touchdown. However, Ohio States abundance of talent quickly wore down the Spartans on both sides of the ball.
After leading 27-10 at halftime, Ohio State added a fourth-quarter touchdown to make the final score 34-10. The defeat dropped Michigan State out of the Top 25, Ohio State tied Georgia for the #3 ranking.
It does not get any easier for the Spartans as they face #8 Wisconsin on the road in Madison, followed by an off week, then #10 Penn State visits on October 26th.
Michigan
In a game that may have defined Michigan’s season to date, the Wolverines needed a win over the 14th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes on homecoming to prevent becoming irrelevant in the Big 10 title race.

Michigan scored 10 points in the first seven minutes of the first quarter then held on with a tenacious defense, only allowing a second-quarter field goal to the Hawkeyes.
The 10-3 win was not pretty, but it was a win and it raised the Wolverines to the 16th rank in this week’s poll. Next week Michigan travels to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini in what should be an easy win heading into a tough two weeks against ranked opponents #10 Penn State and #9 Notre Dame.
