A report in Scientific American magazine details some amazing technology that may enable oceanographers to collect more data from underwater photographs. A researcher by the name of Derya Akkaynak is credited with developing a mathematical algorithm that removes the water from such pictures to present a crystal clear image of what the lens sees. Check it out in this YouTube video.

More than just manipulating a picture as you would with Photoshop, Derya’s program strips the overlaying color of the water away from the underlying image caught by the camera. It operates on a pixel by pixel basis to preserve the exact integrity of the photograph.

Amazing technology, amazing pictures.
