Ally Challenge 2020 Tournament Play, Day 2

Day 2 of the Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club teed off the 1st hole at 9:40 am under high cloudy skies. The threesome of Scott Parel, Steve Flesch, and Kirk Triplett got things going.

The lead trio of Billy Andrade, Tommy Armour III, and Bernhard Langer are the final group of the round, scheduled on the first tee at 11:50 am. With rain forecast for later in the day, players will be watching the skies hoping to complete their 18 before Mother Nature steps in.

Angel Cabrera was one of the guys out early making a move. He started his round at 2 under and was -6 after four birdies on the front nine. Bogies on 11 & 12 slowed his momentum.

Brett Quigley birdied five of the first 10 holes and moved into the lead at 8 under tied with Tommy Armour III who birdied holes 2 & 4 to start his round.

Early Leaders in the Clubhouse

Fred Funk shot a 5 under par 67 which included a bogey on his final hole, the 9th. His two day total of 138, good for -6, joined nine players that posted the lead in the clubhouse. The number separated the field from the title contenders and the also-rans. Those joining Funk included Kirk Triplett, Robert Karlsson, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, David Toms, and Bob Estes

After making the turn Brett Quigley stayed hot and birdied three holes in a row, 12-15, to push his two day total to 133, 11 under par. That became the number to shoot at and everyone else left on the course fell short.

Carlos Franco tied Quigley’s 8 under, low round for the day, to sit one back at -10. Tied with Jim Furyk and Tommy Armour III for 2nd.

Glen Day shot a 6 under, 66, following an opening-round 69 to sit alone in 5th place at 9 under. Wes Short Jr., tied for 3rd yesterday, made bogie on 8 & 9 to stay at 5 under after nine holes. Four birdies and another bogey on the back nine got Short to 8 under and a tie with Woody Austin for 6th place.

A group of five players, tied for 8th, at -7 are still in contention including Defending Champion Jerry Kelly, Kevin Sutherland, Colin Montgomerie, Rod Pampling, and Bernhard Langer

Players Heading the Wrong Direction

First-round leader Billy Andrade lost two strokes to par shooting a 74 and dropped into a tie for 32nd at -4. Tom Gillis, from Lake Orion, MI, shot a 73 and joined Andrade at 4 under.

Mark O’Meara, Rocco Mediate, Jay Haas, and Corey Pavin are in a group at -3 tied for 40th. Paul Broadhurst, the 2018 Champion is at 2 under.

John Daly, Mark Calcavecchia, Lee Janzen, Gary Nicklaus, and Gene Sauers are all in a group tied for 58th at even par.

Vijay Singh combined five bogeys with three birdies and ended the day at 1 over for the tournament. Blaine McCallister trails the field at 16 over par for his two days on the course.
