Fenton, MI — January 6, 2021

With the arrival of the pandemic in 2020, it was a difficult year for good news reporting. So many of the events The Lasco Press covers went virtual or were canceled. Now with Michigan in the grips of “Old Man Winter”, it’s going to be a couple of months before the news cycle ramps up. The Good News to report is the arrival of the COVID vaccine and distribution is ramping up. There is a lot of optimism for 2021.

Last year it was sports that gave us all some entertainment to pass the time sitting at home. NASCAR, the first major sport to return, showed events could be staged safely for competitors and fans alike. The NHL proved team sports could be conducted under COVID restrictions via the use of a bubble. Baseball and basketball followed suit. Fans saw the Monster Energy Supercross season completed in a similar manner.

This year we decided to send Steve Sweitzer, The Lasco Press sports editor and features writer out on assignment to kick off the new year with some on-site stories. Media restrictions are still in place for many events, but we trust Steve will dig up the interesting facts about the big happenings in the world of sports and fun stories our readers enjoy.

The College Football National Championship game is in Miami, the Super Bowl in Tampa, early season action in AMA Supercross visits Orlando. The Daytona 500 opens NASCAR’s season on February 14th followed by a race on the road course inside the Daytona Tri-Oval, then the Cup Series moves to Miami thanks to the restructured schedule for 2021.

Steve is in Central Florida ready to take on these assignments and had this to say about the task. “Always ready to tackle the hardest jobs, I’ll sacrifice being away from Michigan for the next couple of months to get our readers the best coverage and stories.”

Look for an upcoming report on the Professional Bull Riders as they get their season off and running in Ocala January 16-17. Steve has already been given credentials to introduce us to the danger and excitement of the PBR.

We will continue to cover the local scene and stories that come out from under the snow. Let’s have a great year Fenton, we are looking good.
