Monster Energy AMA Supercross action at Orlando saw the first moto of the year for the 250 SX West riders and the 450 SX points race tightened again after Cooper Webb goes back-to-back.

Heavy rains in Florida this week prevented track crews from making significant changes to the course layout at open-air Camping World Stadium. Giving the 450 SX riders a bit of an advantage on the setup from last Saturday. Everyone was watching the 250 SX to see which of the young riders would step up after last year’s series champs moved up a class.

Cameron McAdoo(31) held off Seth Hammaker(150) by less than a second to win Heat 1. In Heat 2, Jeremy Martin(6) easily outdistanced Justin Cooper(32) and Hunter Lawrence(41) for the victory.

Michigan’s Joey Crown(61) finished 9th in the 2nd Heat to avoid the LCQ and go directly to the 250 Main.

A major pileup just after the start of the 250 SX Main brought out the red flag and sent brothers Jeremy Martin and Alex Martin(26) to seek medical attention. Neither would make the restart.

Justin Cooper earned the holeshot but got some early pressure from Jordan Smith(80). However, Smith encountered some difficulty on his 2nd trip through the whoops and crashed, flying headfirst over the handlebars.  Allowing Cooper to pull away from the pack for a convincing start-to-finish win. McAdoo and Garrett Marchbanks(48) earned podium spots finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

450 SX

Ken Roczen(94) came out blazing and won the 450 SX Heat 1. He did so over some strong competition as Adam Cianciarulo(9), Martin Davalos(36), Cooper Webb(2), and Justin Barcia(51) finished 2nd thru 5th behind him.

Jason Anderson(21) easily outran the field in Heat 2 that saw Eli Tomac finish a disappointing 7th. Holly, Michigan’s Broc Tickle, who missed the 450 SX Main last week placed 6th to make sure he avoided the LCQ.

Shane McElrath(12) had to rely on the Last Chance Qualifier to make the featured event, just squeezing in with a 4th place finish.

In the 450 SX Main Event, it was Barcia grabbing the holeshot but he could not deny Cianciarulo from blowing past into the early lead. Barcia held onto 2nd ahead of Webb, last week’s feature winner.

Eli Tomac started 7th and the points leader, Ken Roczen, was mid-pack in 12 out of the starting gates. Tomac worked his way up to 5th when a bobble allowed Malcolm Stewart(27) to regain the position and Tomac fell into the clutches of Roczen.

As Webb moved to the front, Tomac and Roczen waged several side-by-side battles with the defending champion holding off this year’s hottest rider. Finally, after encountering lapped traffic and Tomac getting held up by a lapper, Roczen made the pass.

Cianciarulo crashed in the whoops section and limped off the course, out of the race.

Coming to the checkered flag, Webb took the victory with Marvin Musquin(25) putting in a good ride for 2nd. The fight for the final podium spot came down to Barcia and Roczen. With Roczen pushing hard to minimize lost points it was close on the final lap. Barcia was able to hold onto 3rd.

Eli Tomac finished 6th, Broc Tickle came in 13th.

For the 2nd week in a row, Webb was able to shave points off Roczen’s lead in the standings. Now, just 6 points back, the contest for the top spot goes to Daytona after a week off to give riders a much-needed rest.
