In the 2nd episode of The Voice Battle Rounds, Zania Alake from Detroit, Michigan was selected by her coach, John Legend, to face off against Durell Anthony. Legend selected the Bee Gees’ song “Emotion” to challenge his teammates.

The high-pitched vocals fell into Zania’s more natural range while Durell had to employ his falsetto voice to match the Bee Gees’ rendition of the popular tune. Both singers gave a smooth and flawless performance, leaving Legend with a tough decision on who would advance to the knockout rounds.

Ultimately the superstar coach selected Zania to stay alive in the competition. Viewers seemed stunned that Durell was not stolen by another coach on the panel. It is still early in the Battle Rounds with three more Michigan artists still to come. Rachel Mac of Romeo, Rio Doyle from Adrian, and Bradley Sinclair of Rockford await their opportunity to perform.

The Voice airs Monday nights at 8 pm on NBC.
