The last golf major won by Phil Mickelson was the 2013 (British) Open Championship. Phil has continued to play competitively on the PGA Tour, winning the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, despite qualifying for the PGA Tour Champions circuit after turning 50-years old in June of 2020.

Putting together two strong rounds during a four-round weekend tournament is quite an accomplishment for a golfer Phil’s age. If he can pull off the improbable victory he will jump to the top of a list that includes Jack Nicklaus who won the 1986 Masters just past the age of 46. Julius Boros is the oldest golfer to win a major with his 1968 PGA Championship victory coming at the age of 48 years, 4 months.

Leaderboard Changes

Mickelson started the 2nd round by teeing off on the back-9 first. His opening round 70 positioned him tied for 8th on the leaderboard at 2 under par. A birdie on the 11th hole moved him closer to the lead. Phil gave that stroke back with a bogey on the par 4 13th.

It looked like his round might come apart with bogeys on the 17 and 18 as he dropped back to even par for the tournament. Making the turn to the front side for his final nine holes Mickelson caught fire. Five birdies sent “lefty” to the top of the leaderboard.

First-round leader Corey Conners could not duplicate Thursday’s magic. A round of 3 over par 75 dropped the Canadian professional into a tie for 7th at 2 under. Louis Oosthuizen improved on his 1st round 71 with a 4 under par 68 to tie Mickelson for the top spot.

The leaders are a stroke up on Brooks Koepka, a two-time PGA Champion and two strokes ahead of the winner of the year’s first major, The Masters, Hideki Matsuyama. The ever dangerous Bryson DeChambeau is lurking at 1 under in a tie for 12th.

Friday’s Highlights

Failed to Make the Cut

The Top 80 players and ties moved on to play Saturday and Sunday. The cut fell at 5 over par and a number of big names were packing to go home early. The worlds number 1 ranked golfer, Dustin Johnson missed by a stroke finishing for a two-day total of 6 under. As did other notables Sergio Garcia, Xander Schauffele, and Justin Thomas.

Former PGA Champion John Daly followed an opening round 85 with an 86 and finished last on the field.

Jon Rham at 3 over and Jordan Spieth at +4 slipped past the cut line, but both players will have to shoot rounds in the 60s on moving day to have a chance to contend for the title.
