Fenton, MI — June 8, 2021
One of the great perks of being an automotive writer is the ability to drive a wide variety of vehicles. Styling, performance, handling, and aesthetics are all attributes that get attention when slipping behind the wheel of a new model. So, when offered a chance to climb into the driver’s seat of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, I was excited to try out the new all-electric-powered sports car that carries the iconic Mustang badge.
Rate the experience as incredible! All the hype and chatter about the performance of a vehicle powered by an electric motor is understated. Nothing can prepare you for the adrenaline rush you get when you punch the accelerator. It is difficult to describe because the response is far different from that of a stock combustion engine, even one tuned for high-performance driving.
Taking the Mach-E for a Spin
My road test was coordinated by the friendly staff at Lasco Ford in Fenton. After unplugging the Mustang from its charging station at the dealership, we idled through the lot and out onto Owen Road. Normal driving in traffic was effortless and smooth, it took a few minutes to get to an area with less traffic and minimal residents.
Finally some open road and a chance to see what the Mach-E could do. Slowing to a speed of 15 mph, I jammed the accelerator pedal to the floor. I was thrown back into the driver’s seat, my shoulders pinned to the leather upholstery. By the time my senses caught up to what was happening, a mere blink of the eyes, I glanced at the speedometer to see we were traveling in excess of 70 mph. Scary response, almost unbelievable, LET’S DO IT AGAIN! It was thrilling.
At that point, I was informed the GT model will feature more blinding speed with a 0-60 time of just 3.5 seconds. Several more bursts of pure torque and I was a speed junkie craving my next fix. Please call me when the GT models arrive on the lot.
Beyond First Impressions
Having proved there was no lag in repeated requests for throttle response, the drive focused on some of the equally impressive aspects of the New Mustang. Interior styling is magnificent, a clean, easy to read dash, great sightlines, comfortable seats securely mounted, we definitely tested that.
The 15.5-inch touchscreen is beautiful and perfectly positioned in the center console. SYNC® 4A with Enhanced Voice Recognition and Connected Navigation makes the control of your Mustang’s functions simple. There are three different driving modes Unbridled, Engage, and Whisper. Cruise in silence or with sound added to engine RPMs.
Ford Co-Pilot360TM 2.0 comes standard with these key elements to enhance your safe driving experience. Auto High-Beam Headlamps, BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping System, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Post-Collision Braking, Rear View Camera, Reverse Brake Assist, and Reverse Sensing System.
You can even engage an auto-braking system that slows the vehicle to a stop when you let off the accelerator. Handling is superb, whether cornering at speed or making a lane change. There are so many impressive features about the new Mach-E you have to speak to a Ford Dealer Mustang Representative for a complete feature rundown.
The Big Question, Battery Driving Range
The big “what if” with electric vehicles is always “what if I need to go on a long trip.” With an EPA estimated range of 300 miles and averaging 60 miles per hour, that is 5-hours of driving. If you drive 5-hours do you need to get out from behind the wheel, use the restroom, grab a snack, and just stretch your legs?
The Mach-E recharges to 80% in 30 minutes. You can program your trip into the navigation system and it will schedule stops with charging capabilities along your route, automatically. No need to worry, follow your agenda in almost the same time it takes to stop and fill up your gasoline-powered car.
Impressive? Yes! Is an electric-powered vehicle right for everyone? Maybe! If you want an incredible driving experience, clean green power, safety, and performance all wrapped in an iconic package? Then, the Ford Mustang Mach-E could be the ride you’ve been waiting for.
Vehicles are now hitting the lot, stop by Lasco Ford at 2525 Owen Road in Fenton and see the future, today.
