U.S. Open Preview, Professional Golf’s Toughest Challenge Visits Torrey Pines

For a little over $200, you can walk up and play at the foremost municipal golf facility in the country, Torrey Pines Golf Course. But not this weekend as the professionals visit to contend for the 121st U.S. Open Championship.

The 121st United States Open Golf Championship will be played at Torrey Pines Golf Course, just outside of San Diego this weekend. This will be the 2nd Open hosted at the scenic course along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Tiger Woods won the 2008 Open at Torrey Pines in a playoff with Rocco Mediate.

A trademark of U.S. Open courses is the rough that swallows golf balls, covers the ankles of players, makes greenside shots an adventure, and deals a severe penalty to those who miss the fairway with their drives.

What to Look For This Weekend

Storylines abound for the start of play on Thursday. Can Phil Mickelson compete with father time, and the golf course, to be in contention Sunday? Can Hideki Matsuyama find the magic he displayed at Augusta when he became the first Japanese golfer to win The Masters? Will Jon Rham stay healthy and retain the game he displayed before his COVID incident derailed a sure win in the Memorial. Will Dustin Johnson, the world’s number one ranked golfer, play up to the level he is capable of?

The Brooks Koepka-Bryson DeChambeau feud is apparently still smoldering. After duking it out on social media the pair seem to have a growing dislike for each other. As the defending Open champion, DeChambeau is looking for a repeat. He says that is all that he is concentrating on at the moment. Everyone is denying the rumor that the pair were offered a matchup in round one and Bryson declined to play with Koepka. Here’s hoping the two will end up teeing off together on the final day chasing the Claret Jug.

Rahm is the betting favorite. Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Xander Schauffele are listed with equal odds just behind him. Our Top 3, Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa.  Follow Daily Coverage all weekend from The Lasco Press.
