March Madness continues tonight with the first of the “Sweet 16” games as the Michigan Wolverines look to add to their success from the opening weekend of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament action.

Last Thursday the 11th seeded Wolverines took on the sixth seed Colorado State Rams, walking off the court with a 75-63 victory. They followed up that performance with a thrilling 76-68 win over the third-seeded Tennessee Volunteers.

Michigan trailed 37-32 at halftime, then came out in the second half and outscored the higher-ranked squad by 13 points to advance.

Big Ten Contenders

The task only gets harder this week as the Wolverines take on the number two seed in the South Region, the Villanova Wildcats. Villanova destroyed Delaware 80-60 in the opening round and then eliminated Michigan’s Big Ten rival Ohio State 71-61 in the round of 32.

Michigan is one of only two Big Ten teams remaining in the tournament. The Purdue Boilermakers will be the statistical favorite tomorrow night when they take on Saint Peter’s. Undoubtedly, the 15th seeded underdogs will be the crowd’s favorite as they try to continue their Cinderella march to the Final Four dance.

Seven other Big Ten conference schools fell on the first weekend, including the Michigan State Spartans who were eliminated by the Duke Blue Devils. Duke’s athletes are trying to give their legendary coach, Mike Krzyzewski, a championship sendoff in his final season on the bench.
