The eyes of the golf world were focused on the star-studded threesome that teed off on the 10th hole of Southern Hills Country Club yesterday at 8:11 in the morning (local time). The paring of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Tiger Woods provided early drama in the 104th edition of the PGA Championship.

The venue, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, hosted the tournament in 2007 with Tiger hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy during a weekend that was marked by record-setting heat. The forecast for this year’s tournament is much milder. The heat will come from the competition as the best professional golfers in the world chase the second major championship of the year.

Early Excitement

McIlroy started his round going three-under-par after the first five holes. His playing partners followed suit with Tiger at two-under and Spieth sitting at one-under over the opening holes.

The 417-yard, par four, 15th hole set the tone for the remainder of the day. McIlroy made his fourth straight birdie while Woods and Spieth each carded a bogey.

Tiger bogeyed the 18th which began a streak of three straight culminating with a birdie on hole number three. But, bogies on four, eight, and nine left Woods at four-over-par for the round, tied for 98th place out of the 156 golfers in the tournament. Only the top 70 players in the field advance to play the final two rounds.

An interesting twist to the cut line rules for the PGA championship allows PGA of America club professionals to play all four rounds regardless of their score. That won’t help Tiger as he will need to rebound, likely with a score under par in round two to survive the cut.

Spieth recorded three more bogies before scoring a birdie on the seventh hole to give him an opening-round score of 72 on the par-70 layout. He sits tied for 56th and cannot afford a blow-up on Friday if he is going to compete in all four rounds.

McIlroy went on to birdie the second and fifth holes running his score to six-under-par before bogeying the sixth and eighth holes. A birdie on the ninth and final hole of the day returned him to five-under for the round and sole possession of the lead after round one.
