Longtime Fenton residents will no doubt remember Frank’s Tavern. The historic venue sat on the shores of Lake Ponemah for 80 years serving the finest fried fish and seafood treats in the area. The original owner, Frank Vosburgh, opened the small eatery in the early 1930s and it drew people from a wide radius. Never taking reservations, waiting in line was common as diners loved the atmosphere and the food.

Sold to Rachel, a long-time employee, she operated the restaurant until taking a 10-year break from the business after closing the site in 2010. Now Rachel and her husband Shayne Medore are back in a big way. Rebranded as Frank’s Hoppy Bistro, more on that in a minute, the same recipes and familiar tastes are drawing a new generation of fans.

New Location / New Name

A Grand Opening celebration on Tuesday, June 7th featured the new location of Frank’s renewal with a ribbon-cutting ceremony presented by the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce. Frank’s Hoppy Bistro is on the North side of Fenton at the corner of U.S. Highway 23 and Thompson Road. Adjacent to the boating dealer, Freeway Sports Center.

What about the Hoppy name? One of the staples of Frank’s Tavern was the fried frog legs, the same great recipe still exists with Rachel dishing the tasty treats to guests. Hops are also used to brew beer. Rachel’s husband Shayne is a brewmaster and while the Hoppy Bistro does not fashion its own beer brand they serve up some of the most unique and delicious local craft brews on tap.

The Food

While the fish (Haddock and Cod) and the jumbo fried shrimp are the most popular menu items, diners can enjoy some new selections that are becoming favorites. Clam strips topped with Frank’s Original Fish Sauce are a real treat. Artisan Pizzas feature a number of different toppings. Sticking to Frank’s original seafood theme, the Shrimp Pesto Pizza is a welcome combination. The Cheeseburger Pizza and BBQ Chicken Pizza add some familiarity to the ordering options. The Gator Bites are quickly becoming the appetizer of choice.

The Drinks

Craft beers on draft are just openers when it comes to the drink menu. If you enjoy an adult beverage with your dinner, try the interesting selections of craft cocktails and a varied wine list.
