The Country Club, Brookline, MA — June 18, 2022
The leaderboard on day three of the 2022 U.S. Open read like a stock ticker as The Country Club at Brookline, Massachusetts bared its teeth and bit back at the greatest golfers in the world. A change in the weather that featured a shift in the wind direction reduced the number of golfers in red numbers from 23 to just nine.
Yesterday’s co-leaders, Collin Morikawa and Joel Dahmen started the third round at five-under-par. They both dropped, almost out of sight. Morikawa bogeyed the fourth hole, birdied the fifth, and then carded three more bogeys to go along with two double bogeys over the remainder of his round. He sits at two-over-par in a tie for 17th.
Dahmen bogeyed the first, fourth, seventh, and eighth holes before settling down to make 10 straight pars. He is possibly still in contention at one-under for the tournament, tied for seventh.
Incredible Swings
When you talk about incredible swings in professional golf it usually means the players are showing off their stunning skills. Today the swings in momentum sent names up and down the score sheet.
Scottie Scheffler, the number one ranked player in the world, started his day at three-under-par. A front nine score of 32 on the par 35 layout included an eagle on the eighth hole that sent Scheffler into the lead at six-under. His back nine featured a four hole stretch where he went double bogey, bogey, bogey, and bogey. He finished his round at two-under for the tournament and remarkably is tied for fourth.
Rory McIlroy lost three strokes to par on his opening nine. An even-par back nine left him in the tie for seventh with Dahmen and Sam Burns. Burns’ round included three birdies and four bogeys.

Another New Leader
Jon Rahm came to the 18th hole hot off birdies on 14, 15, and 17. Looking at the leaderboard he found himself at the top with a cumulative score of five-under-par. A double-bogey on the 18th left him a stroke off the lead.
Matt Fitzpatrick got to the five-under mark, but a bogey on 18 left him in a tie for the lead at four-under. Through all the chaos, Will Zalatoris put together three birdies and a single bogey on the front nine. A solid back nine with eight pars and a birdie on the 15th, the longest par-four on the course at 503 yards. He joined Fitzpatrick as the co-leader with just one round remaining in the 122nd U.S. Open.
It’s truly anyone’s tournament to win.
