Day Two at The Open, Two Camerons Atop the Leaderboard

After going bogey-free during his opening round in the 150th Open Championship, Cameron Young gave up his first-round lead by making two bogeys on Friday. There is still a Cameron at the top of the leaderboard, but now it’s Cameron Smith, the 2022 Players Championship winner.

The Australian Cameron matched the American Cameron’s open day 64 to take over the top spot after round two. Smith’s two-day total of 13-under-par leaves him two strokes clear of Young.

Five birdies by Young helped offset the two bogeys on his card, and at 11-under, he sits one stroke up on Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland, who are tied for third at 10-under.

Making a Run at the Leaders

Dustin Johnson rocketed up the leaderboard with a second-day score of 67. His two-day total of nine-under-par positioned him alone in fifth.

Scottie Scheffler matched his first-day score of 68 to stay within five strokes of the lead. He is tied for fifth with Tyrrell Hatton at eight-under.

On a day the weather gave the field a bit of a break, 12 more golfers posted total scores under par. Bringing to 65, the number in red numbers. Another 18 players are sitting at even-par, which is what it took to continue playing over the weekend.

Tony Finau bogeyed 16 and 17, he needed a birdie on the 18th hole to avoid being cut. Robert Dinwiddie was tied for second after the first round at five-under. He gave every one of those strokes back and just eeked by at even par for his two-day total.

The Cut

Being over par after two days of play was enough to be sent home as the cut line fell at plus one. Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen, Webb Simpson, Ernie Els, and defending champion Collin Morikawa were among the 14 that missed out by a single stroke.

Keegan Bradley, Padraig Harrington, John Daly, and Zach Johnson all finished three over. Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Gary Woodland also missed the cut.

Tiger Woods finished at nine-over-par and sadly acknowledged this is likely the last time he will play in an Open at St. Andrews. After taking two of his three Open wins on the iconic Old Course, he could not match the magic of years past. Much to the disappointment of the fans packing the grandstands to salute his effort.
