The question entering the third round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Course was, would anyone be able to make a run at the two leaders who dominated the first two rounds of the tournament?
The answer is no. Cameron Young shot a 65 to follow up yesterday’s score of 63 to move into sole possession of the third spot on the leaderboard. However, he trails the co-leaders Taylor Pendrith and Tony Finau by four strokes entering the final round of play.
Pendrith and Finau have mirrored each other during their first three rounds. After 64s on opening day, Pendrith went 65 and 66, and Finau responded with 66 and 65. Both are 21-under-par and looking to walk away with the trophy and the winner’s share after play on Sunday.
In Pursuit
Young has already shown he is capable of putting together a spectacular round after shooting 63 on Friday. It will take that and maybe more, barring a collapse from the top two to contend for the win tomorrow.
Stephan Jaeger, Patrick Cantlay, and Scott Stallings are 16, 15, and 14 below par respectively. Trailing the pacesetters by five, six, and seven strokes. They are likely playing for fourth place money given the consistency of the players in front of them.
Cam Davis, the defending champion, shot a 65 Saturday to bring him into a tie for 16th at 10 under. He won’t be taking the trophy back to Australia this year.
Sahith Theegala looked like he could mount a challenge after opening the tournament with a 68 and then posting a 67 on day two. A score of 73 on Saturday removed the tour rookie from contention this weekend.
The Final Round
Sunday could produce a real shootout if the leaders continue their scoring pace. Finau is yet to make a bogey all week. When Pendrith does record a square on his score card, he quickly counters with a circle to gain the stroke back. Are extra holes a certainty? don’t bet against it.
