RedBud MX, Buchanan, MI — July 3, 2022

Every year motocross diehards gather at the mecca of motorcycle racing to celebrate the sport and our nation’s birthday. The July 4th weekend brings the best American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) professional riders to RedBud Motorcross to compete in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

Located in Buchanan, RedBud MX is almost as far west and south as you can get and still be in Michigan. Credited with “the best dirt on earth” the track is a favorite of top riders from America and around the globe. It is also a place fans flock to for incredible racing, picturesque sightlines, and a weekend of fun.

If you have not yet experienced the thrill of yelling ReeeedBuuuuud at the top of your lungs, here is why you should circle an upcoming date on your calendar.

Great Racing

The 2022 Monster Energy AMA Supercross 450cc Champion, Eli Tomac(3), put on a show in Moto #1 taking the holeshot and riding perfect laps to capture the win. Current AMA Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship points leader, Chase Sexton (23), finished second.

Winning the RedBud Nationals is a title every motocross athlete covets. The lowest scoring rider, based on finishes in two motos, earns the trophy that will occupy a prominent space on the mantlepiece.

Intent on denying Tomac his third RedBud title the pack squeezed him out on the start of Moto #2 with Justin Barcia(51) grabbing the holeshot and Ken Roczen(94) taking the early lead. Tomac worked his way around both riders with Sexton close behind.

The pair finished one-two again to allow Tomac to close within seven points after five of 12 events on the 2022 outdoor racing circuit.

The 450MX class welcomed the return of four-time Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey(5). After a five-year layoff, Dungey has returned to the circuit. His seventh-place finish at RedBud has him sitting fifth in the standings, 71 points behind Sexton.

250MX Class

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Ryan Dungey, Ryder DiFrancesco(523) made his first career AMA Pro Motocross 250 Class start at RedBud. The 17-year-old phenom from Bakersfield, CA has been on the next superstar radar since his first Loretta Lynn championship at the age of six. Ryder’s eight total AMA Amateur Nationals Championships were followed by four straight wins in the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross Futures class.

Ryder got off to an inauspicious debut going down in the second corner of Moto #1. He finished 14th, improving to 12th in Moto #2.

Jett Lawrence(1), the 2021 AMA Pro Motocross 250 Class Champion and 2022 Monster Energy Supercross 250 East Champion, came to RedBud the winner of the first four events of the season. But, engine trouble on his Honda CRF250R resulted in a 35th place finish in Moto #1. Despite winning Moto #2, Jett finished ninth at RedBud costing him the top spot in the standings.

Hunter Lawrence(96) passed his brother to jump to the top of the points ladder, seven up on Jett with a second-place finish at RedBud. Joe Shimoda(30) scored his first AMA Pro Motocross 250 Class win at RedBud with his first and third-place finishes during the afternoon.

The Venue

RedBud MX is located just north of the town of Buchanan in the rolling hills of Southwestern Michigan. Not far from the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. For motocross fans, the venue is as iconic as the Golden Dome is to Fighting Irish football fans.

The Ritchie family bought the property and has been hosting races on the site since the early 1970s. The track has been visited four times by the international competition “Motocross of Nations.” In 2022 the MXoN returns for the fifth time to the “best dirt on earth.”

Know for exceptional hospitality, RedBud MX has acres of camping space, great sightlines for viewing the track, plenty of parking, and even spots you can back up a pickup truck to tailgate with a trackside view. Race fans can choose to sit in the multiple grandstands, on sloping hillsides, or under the shade trees that dot the property and add to the comfortable feeling of the place.

If you are staying for a weekend, you can visit the local wineries that choose the area to grow their grapes in the rich soil. Anglers will appreciate the easy access to the St. Joseph River, a tributary of Lake Michigan. A drive through the scenic countryside will reveal numerous fruit and vegetable stands featuring the produce grown in the area. Michigan peaches are a local favorite during the month of August and U-picks are abundant for various summer fruits.

The Fun

Evenings at RedBud racing events are legendary. Campers gather to have fun, share meals cooked over an open fire, and partake of their favorite beverages. Fireworks on the Friday closest to the 4th of July are a part of RedBud Nationals race weekends.

Almost as much fun as watching the on-track racing action is the sport of people watching. Revelers celebrating Independence Day dress the part, wearing their allegiances on their sleeves and hats. When the temperature rises the clothes come off, modestly of course. Motocross fans know how to party, get loud, and appreciate the skills displayed by the riders.

Circle September 24th and 25th on this year’s calendar, go online at the Redbud Website to reserve your camping space, and purchase tickets to the Motocross of Nations.
