Important Update on the Old Newsboys Fundraiser
For the 7th season in a row, the Flint Firebirds Hockey Club and the Old Newsboys of Flint partnered for their annual toy drive to ensure that “no child be forgotten” during the holiday season, on Saturday, December 10th. This year’s event raised $18,084.00 and collected over 500 toys to be distributed to families in need around Genesee County.
“Partnering with the Flint Firebirds this season has allowed the Old Newsboys of Flint to help over 700 children and families during Christmas,” Director of Finance for the Old Newsboys of Flint Heather McMullen said. “We are grateful to the Flint Firebirds, Dort Financial Credit Union, LJ Inc., and to everyone who donated in joining us to help those who are struggling during the holiday season and everyone’s ongoing commitment to giving back to our community.”
Leading up to the game on Saturday, December 10th at 7:00 pm vs the Sarnia Sting, the Firebirds will be collecting new toys with a recommended minimum donation value of $10 to receive a complimentary sponsored ticket ($18 value) from Dort Financial Credit Union and LJ Inc.
Donations will be accepted starting Tuesday, December 6th at 11:00 am at the Bird’s Nest (Flint Firebirds Merchandise Store) located in the Dort Financial Center at 3501 Lapeer Rd. Flint, MI 48503. Regular store hours will be 11:00 am-5:00 pm this week.
Donations will also be accepted before the Firebirds game Saturday in the lobby of the Dort Financial Center until 7:00 p.m. The Flint Firebirds are encouraging the community to come out and support the Old Newsboys of Flint by donating a new toy and the opportunity to see future NHL talent at a Firebirds game!
Special Jersey Auction
In addition to the toy drive, the Flint Firebirds will also be wearing elf-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off following the conclusion of the game and all proceeds will benefit the Old Newsboys of Flint.
“The Flint Firebirds are excited to continue their support for the Old Newsboys of Flint and their mission of ‘let no child be forgotten,’” President of the Flint Firebirds Jeremy Torrey said. “Last season was a record-breaking fundraiser and our goal is to pass that again this year.”
The Old Newsboys of Flint is located at 6255 Taylor Dr. in Flint. The Old Newsboys has served our community since 1924 and prides themselves on their slogan “let no child be forgotten” at Christmas time. They provide struggling families and children in our community with new toys and warm clothing. The items they collect are new toys, hats, gloves, socks, underwear, board games, and coloring books & crayons.
“Last year this event helped support over 400 children and families in our community and we are hoping that this year we are able to surpass that number and help even more,” the Director of Finance for the Old Newsboys of Flint Heather McMullen said. “We are grateful to the Flint Firebirds, Dort Financial Credit Union, and LJ Inc. for joining us to help those who are struggling during the holiday season and their ongoing commitment to giving back to our community.”
About Old Newsboys of Flint
The Old Newsboys of Flint, Inc. was formed when two of Detroit’s Old Newsboys Goodfellows visited Flint’s Buick Body Plant in 1924. Like Detroit, Flint had children in desperate need of just basic need items. With leaders from the factory, several businesses and civic leaders as well as police and fire chiefs, the old Newsboys hit the streets for their first newspaper sale.
That first year, 210 children across Genesee County received basic need items such as clothing along with age-appropriate gifts from the Old Newsboys of Flint. Since 1924, the Christmas Program has put gifts under the tree for more than 835,125 children across Genesee County. It is our longest-running and highest impact program providing children with a sweat suit, two pairs of socks and underwear, a winter hat, a pair of warm gloves, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and an age-appropriate gift.
In 2021, this program brought gifts to 5,125 children ages newborn through high school. The Old Newsboys staff, board and volunteers are committed to improving the quality of life for the children within Genesee County, doing it one child at a time.
