Detroit, MI — June 4, 2023
Racing returned to the streets of Detroit as the city hosted the IndyCar series a week after the Indianapolis 500. The Detroit Grand Prix ran 100 laps through the riverside downtown circuit.
Alex Palou(10) started on the pole and had to start the race twice. Indy officials waived off the start as the field was deemed to be too strung out as they approached the green flag. The next time around, Palou fired off into the lead, leaving Scott McLaughlin in the dust.
The early race drama continued when Callum Ilott ran into the back of Kyle Kirkwood on lap one. The accident destroyed Ilott’s car and damaged the rear wing of Kirkwood’s machine.
Palou pulled away to a comfortable lead early.
Pato O’Ward crashed out of the race after hitting the wall 41 laps into his race. Graham Rahal drove into a wall while circling the track under caution on Lap 50.
Team Penske driver Will Power tried to make a race of it. He led 14 of the 100 laps. He moved through several cars over the last ten laps to get to the second spot. But it was Palou who ran out front for 74 circuits of the tight street course to take the win.
Indy 500 Champion, Josef Newgarden, finished in 10th. After a first-lap accident required Kyle Kirkwood to have his rear wing replaced. The Andretti Autosport driver finished in the sixth position.
