The 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic teed off at the Detroit Golf Club this morning, with half of the field hitting the links at 6:45 am. Notables in the morning groups were defending champion Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, fresh off a 5th place finish at the U.S. Open, and two-time major winner (2020 PGA and 2021 Open Championship) Colin Morikawa.

The air was thick, the skies were hazy, and rain threatened most of the morning. The course was beautiful, and the players shot some low rounds. But not Finau. Unable to find the magic from a year ago, Finau struggled through an even par round with four birdies and four bogeys. That score left him with a lot of work to do on Friday just to make the cut.

Fowler shared the lead at seven under with two holes to play in his opening round. However, bogeys on eight and nine, his 17th and 18th holes, left him with a five-under-par 67 on Day One. Morikawa also held a share of the lead, briefly, shooting a bogey-free six under par round of 66.

Morning Leaders

Former world #1 ranked amateur, Ludvig Aberg, looked like he might run his opening round score into double digits below par when he chipped in for an eagle from just off the green on the par-five seventh hole. After starting on the back nine, his laser-accurate bump and run got him to nine-under-par after 16 holes played. He then bogeyed the eighth and ninth to end his day at seven under.

Sam Ryder, Aaron Rai, and Sam Bennett also finished up with scores of 65 to make it four golfers in at seven-under-par.

But it was Peter Kuest who gave the afternoon latecomers the score to shoot at during their session. Kuest used nine birdies and a single bogey to post a 64 and become the leader in the clubhouse at eight under par.

Afternoon Golfers

Vince Whaley, Carson Young, and Max McGreevy led the afternoon threesomes off the first tee shortly after the noon hour. Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, and Sungjae Im drew the most interest from the nice-sized galleries attending the opening round of play.

The smokey haze continued, and temperatures climbed as the rain moved off. Ideal conditions to post a low number during the second half of the opening round.

Taylor Moore took advantage of the conditions to card a 64 and share the lead with Kuest. Moore’s eight under round included five birdies on the back nine of the course.

Three more golfers joined the tie for third at seven under. Dylan Wu, Justin Suh, and Adam Schenk are among the seven professionals who shot seven under-par 65s.

Max Homa, ranked third in the FedEx Cup standings, came in at three under.

The lone amateur in the field, Gordon Sargent, was three-under-par after his first nine holes. Bogeys on 13, 15, and 16 brought him back to even. A birdie/par finish gave him a score of 71.

Golf’s talking heads were projecting it would take a score of four under to survive the cut. Here is the entire leaderboard for Round One.
