We don’t do a lot of movie reviews at The Lasco Press. However, that does not mean we are oblivious to the hype surrounding summer blockbuster releases from the major studios. Barbie and Oppenheimer open this weekend.

The return of the Indiana Jones series starring Harrison Ford as the iconic archaeologist on another world-saving adventure premiered June 30th. The 81-year-old actor reprises the popular “Indie” character for the fifth time, complete with Fedora hat and bullwhip in the “Dial of Destiny.”

Oppenheimer

A tight lid has been placed on Oppenheimer by Director Christopher Nolan. With actors being instructed not to discuss details of their roles. The film portrays brilliant American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer as he headed the “Manhattan Project” to develop the most destructive weapon in world history, the atomic bomb. The intense imagery and subject matter earned the film an “R” ratting.

Barbie

Maybe the most surprising of the new arrivals is Barbie, complete with its “PG-13” rating. Barbie turned 64 years old in March. Billions of pre-teen girls owned the doll, along with a seemingly endless number of clothes and accessories that accompanied Mattel’s most successful toy line.

Given the demographics of the Barbie market, it seems strange that the movie restricts its current owners from viewership. The rating board cited “suggestive references and brief language” in its evaluation of the film.

So maybe the film is targeted at all those Barbie owners that have graduated to more adult themes. Moms wanting to preview the show in real adult style can catch a special Bubbles & Brunch event at Emagine Royal Oak (MI) and Emagine Palladium (Birmingham, MI) Sunday, July 23, 2023. Enjoy a Buffet & Bottomless Mimosa Bar from 11:00 am-12:30 pm, with the movie starting at 12:30 pm. An afternoon session is from 12:30 pm-2:00 pm, and the movie starts at 2:00 pm.
