Big Changes on Day Two in the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday as round one of The Open Championship concluded, Christo Lamprecht was the toast of Hoylake. His five-under-par 66 gave him a share of the lead in the 151st edition of professional golf’s oldest invitational.

Tonight Lamprecht may be looking for a pub to forget about what was almost an incomprehensible disaster. Eight bogeys without a single birdie to offset them gave the amateur a second-round score of 79 and dropped him into a tie for 62nd position. In the last group of players to make the cut at three over.

Lamprecht was in good company. World number one, Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, and Rickie Fowler were among the 15 players that finished with the same two-day total and barely squeaked under the wire to qualify for play on Saturday and Sunday.

On the opposite end of the spectrum. Brian Harman shot the best round of the tournament thus far, a six under par 65. Matched with his four-under score that was just a single stroke out of the first-day lead. Harman sits atop the leaderboard, ten under at the midway point.

Another first-day leader, Tommy Fleetwood, shot an even-par 71. It was good enough to put him alone in second, still at five under and five strokes out of the lead. Sepp Strake is third at four under. Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, and Subhankar Sharma are tied for fourth at three under par.

Defending Open Champion Cameron Smith and Jordan Spieth are in a group of four tied for seventh at two under. Fourteen players are tied for 11th place at one under, including Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, and Max Homa.

Players Missing the Cut

Collin Morikawa(+4), Keegan Bradley(+4), Tony Finau(+6), Phil Mickelson(+9), and Dustin Johnson(+13) are some of the similar names heading home for the weekend after missing the cut. Last on the field? Jazz Janewattananond from Thailand shot 81-83 to finish at 22 over par.

All the drama tomorrow may reside with Harman. Can he run away and hide? Or will the rest of the field catch up before the pressure of the final day separates the contenders from the pretenders?
