Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, Grand Blanc, MI — August 26, 2023

The PGA Tour Champions are finally playing golf at Warwick Hills in The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren. Torrential rains left the course unplayable, causing the first round to be postponed to Saturday.

Golfers will try and complete 36 holes today, along with all the other activities scheduled for the event.

Early Action

Paul Stankowski got off to a fast start. Playing with the second group off the first tee, Stankowski carded five birdies over his opening nine holes.

Jeff Maggert one-upped that score, making birdies on four of the first five holes and then sinking his approach shot from the fairway on number nine for an eagle. Giving him a score of 30, six under par, for the first nine holes.

Vijay Singh shot two under after nine holes, starting his round on number 10. He caught fire on the final nine with birdies on one, two, and four. Followed by an eagle out of the fairway on the sixth hole. Singh did make a bogey on his next-to-last hole to finish his round at six under.

The trio of Stankowski, Maggert, and Singh were the leaders in the clubhouse at the conclusion of Round One. By comparison, pre-tournament favorites Bernhard Langer(-3) and Steve Stricker(-2) trailed by three and four strokes respectively.

Round Two

The low round of the afternoon session was the same as round one, six-under-par. Darren Clarke, Paul Goydos, Stephen Ames, and John Huston each recorded 66. For Clarke and Goydos, it propelled them into the tournament lead at 11 under par.

Four players are tied for third at ten under par. Stephen Ames, Harrison Frazar, Jeff Maggert, and Vijay Singh. Bernhard Langer sits alone in seventh place at nine under.

Defending Champion Steve Stricker is tied for 12th place, five strokes back at six under par.

Celebrity Challenge

Two teams captained by Boxer Andre Dirrell from Flint, Michigan, and Darren McCarty of the Detroit Red Wings competed in the two-hole Celebrity Challenge. With the great Jack Nicklaus as coach, and mulligan putter.

It was all in good fun as Ally Financial donated $15,000 each to My Brother’s Keeper and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Flint.

Community Concert

The day’s events were capped off with the Community Concert highlighted by Miranda Lambert. One of the biggest crowds ever turned out to see and hear the country superstar bring her hits to the Ally Challenge stage.
