Cole Custer has a fast Ford Mustang, and it looked like he would cruise to victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Race. But nothing is ever certain until the checkered flag waves.

Custer led 96 laps of the race scheduled for 200 circuits around the one-mile Phoenix Raceway. After a late caution, he fought off a challenge from the other three championship contenders when the race restarted with 12 laps to go.

Quickly establishing an interval that would likely have carried him to the finish, another on-track incident brought out the caution again with five laps to go, sending the race into overtime.

Fittingly, the championship four contenders lined up in the first two rows, with Custer on the outside of row one and John Hunter Nemechek on the inside, Justin Allgaier and Sam Mayer in row two.

The leaders went four wide through turn one. Mayer was squeezed out on the bottom of the track as the three other drivers went side by side through turn two. Custer found himself in third.

“I thought it was over,” Custer said. “I mean, went from first to third, and I was able to shift the car all night. And Doug Yates’ horsepower worked out, pulled me off the corner. I can’t believe we won that thing after going back to third on that restart.

“Man, I can’t say enough about these guys. We started the year off, and it was a struggle, and we had to kind of dig deep with each other, really talk about how to get better, and to see how much this group has grown through the year.”

Clearly driving the dominant car, Custer gave the Blue Oval its second championship title of the weekend. Ryan Blaney is the single Ford entry in Sunday’s Cup Series finale. Three for three? Stay tuned.
