Michigan Wins 12th College Football National Championship

NRG Stadium, Houston, TX — January 8, 2024

It has been since 1997 that the Michigan Wolverines have claimed a college football national championship. 2023 saw the maize and blue play six games without their head coach (due to suspensions) and become mired in a sign-stealing scandal. Through it all, they became the first college football team to record 1,000 all-time victories and shook off the curse of poor starts in College Football Playoff (CFP) games.

Running back Donovan Edwards scored on touchdown runs of 41 and 46 yards in the first quarter. Michigan averaged 19 yards per rushing attempt in the opening 15 minutes of the game. Racking up 174 yards to post 14 points on the shell-shocked Washington Huskies.

Those two early scores were enough to take the win as the brutal Wolverine defense limited the potent Huskie offense to just 13 points in the game.

The final 34-13 score spoke to the dominance of Michigan’s performance in the battle of 14-0 teams. It moved the Wolverines out of a tie with USC into sole possession of fifth place on the list of all-time national championships claimed (NCAA recognizes 10 U of M titles).
