Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, CA — January 27, 2024

The second stop in Anaheim for the AMA Supercross season is the first Triple Crown event of the year. It comes after three different winners in each division during the first three rounds of 2024.

After two consecutive weeks of rain, a perfect night greets the riders for Anaheim 2. The track is in excellent condition and should produce some competitive motos.

250SX Race One

Levi Kitchen(47) shot out of the starting gate, took the lead across the holeshot line, and led the early laps of the moto. Ryder DiFrancesco(34), Nate Thrasher(57, RJ Hampshire(24, and Garrett Marchbanks(26) rounded out the top five.

Jo Shimoda continues to be snakebitten in the early season races. He went down during the opening laps and was relegated to the rear of the pack. At mid-race, Thrasher and Hampshire had passed DiFrancesco. The two riders staged a classic back-and-forth battle for second behind Kitchen.

Hampshire came out on top but could not put much of a dent in the second-and-a-half advantage of Kitchen. On the final lap, Hamshire closed but could not make the pass for the lead. Thrasher held on for the third position.

Shimoda recovered to finish ninth. However, his fall may have eliminated him from contention for the overall win.

450SX Race One

Adam Ciancirullo won’t race tonight as he is dealing with a fractured finger and was withdrawn from the race. Last week’s winner and current points leader, Aaron Plessinger(7), started with the 13th gate choice but was able to establish himself in the top five early.

Chase Sexton(1) grabbed the hole shot and held the lead, establishing an almost two-second advantage over Cooper Webb(2) in the opening laps. Ken Roczen(94) sat third, Jason Anderson(21) fourth, and Eli Tomac(3) sixth.

Jett Lawrence(18) took a bump at the beginning of the first lap and came off his bike. He quickly recovered but dropped to the rear of the field.

With four minutes to go, Sexton had built his lead to over three seconds. Tomac passed Plessinger for fifth, and Jett had caught his brother Hunter Lawrence(96) for ninth place.

Leading wire-to-wire, Sexton took the win. The next five riders held their positions, with Jett Lawrence able to work his way up to the seventh spot. Based on the results of race one, the series standing could be up for a big scramble at the end of the night.

250SX Race Two

A new name came to the front in race two. Phil Nicoletti(36) got the hole shot, and he put a half-second on RJ Hampshire back in second place. Race one winner Levi Kitchen ran third.

Jordan Smith(31), the points leader in 250SX West, Nate Thrasher, and Mitchell Oldenburg(55) got tangled on the first lap and went down. The crash put all three at the back of the pack.

Five minutes in, Hampshire and Kitchen passed Nicoletti and quickly separated themselves from the remainder of the field.

Kitchen pulled up next to Hampshire just before the finish and looked like he might repeat his victory in race one. However, Hampshire held him off, and the pair will enter the final race tied three-three for the overall.

Shimoda passed Nicoletti for the third position on the final lap. Nicoletti sits third overall with 11 points, and Shimoda is fourth with 12. Smith recovered to finish in eighth and Thrasher came home in the 10th position.

450SX Race Two

Cooper Webb and Aaron Plessinger battled for the holeshot, with Webb grabbing the lead. Running a close third, Jason Anderson pushed past Plessinger, hounded Webb into a mistake, and took over the top spot two minutes into the moto.

Other favorites, Jett Lawrence was sixth, Eli Tomac ran 12th, and race one winner Chase Sexton was back in 13th.

Anderson, Webb, and Plessinger held down the top three spots. But, back in the pack positions were swapping around every lap. Lawrence moved to fourth, Sexton to ninth, and Tomac held 10th.

At the front, Anderson moved away while Webb, Plessinger, and Jett Lawrence all fought for second through fourth.

As the timed portion of the moto expired, Lawrence made the pass on Plessinger for third. Anderson cruised away from Webb for the win.

The overall standings are close. Webb 4, Anderson 5, Roczen 9, Jett Lawrence 10, and Plessinger 10 are the top five, and all are potentially in the running, depending on what happens in the final race of the evening.

250SX Race Three

Nate Thrasher avoided trouble at the start of race three and earned the holeshot. Levi Kitchen followed closely in second place. RJ Hampshire got a bad start and found himself mired in the pack. At the halfway point, Hampshire had moved into fifth but trailed Kitchen by eight seconds. He will have to pass Kitchen to take the overall win.

Hamshire crashed in the whoops and dropped to the eighth position. He still remains second overall. But his chances for the overall win went away when he hit the dirt.

Jo Shimoda held down the third spot, with current points leader Jordan Smith in fourth. At the end of the timed portion of the moto, Shimoda caught and passed Kitchen. The change in position was meaningless in the overall standings.

Thrasher’s win moved him onto the podium with a third-place finish overall. The overall for Kitchen, combined with the overall fifth for Smith, left the pair tied at the top of the 250SX West points standing.

450SX Race Three

Vince Friese(125) grabbed the holeshot but could not sustain the lead past the first corner. Chase Sexton took the top spot away, only to be passed by Eli Tomac a corner later. Aaron Plessinger went into third, Jett Lawrence ran fourth, and Cooper Webb sat in the fifth position. If he can maintain that spot, Webb will take the overall title.

Trouble for Ken Roczen and Jason Anderson, who both went down on the first lap and faced a battle to get back into contention after falling to the rear of the field.

At the midpoint of the race, Lawrence passed Plessinger and closed on Sexton. When Jett took over the second spot, he trailed Tomac by almost five seconds.

Anderson steadily moved up to the seventh position at the end of the time portion of the moto. He will have to catch and pass Webb to have a shot at the overall. On the final lap, the interval between the two was four seconds.

Tomac rode away with the race-three win and an overall podium finish of second. Lawrence crashed on the final, and it cost him an overall podium. Plessinger finished third in the race for a third-place overall podium allowing him to retain the points lead for another week.

Webb took the overall event win even though he did not win a race during the event. He is the fourth different event winner in four rounds of AMA Supercross this season.

A mere 10 points separate the top five riders in the 450SX points standings four races into the season.
