Ken Roczen Returns to Top of the Winner’s Podium at Glendale Supercross

State Farm Arena, Glendale, AZ — February 10, 2024

Just 16 points separate the top six riders in the 450CC Supercross season standings as round six begins at Glendale, Arizona. After the 250SX East riders got their first laps on track in Detroit, the West riders are back to pick up their battle with Jordan Smith(31) and Levi Kitchen(47) tied atop the points standings out west.

450SX Heats

Vince Friese(125) got off to a great start in Heat One for the master class of riders. But it was Ken Roczen(94) who took the early lead and opened some space over Malcolm Stewart (27) in second place. Jett Lawrence(18), last week’s winner, passed Friese for third, and Chase Sexton(1) ran in fourth to the checkered flag.

Sexton is riding with a bone bruise on his left hand after a practice crash earlier in the week. He leads the standings by one point over Jett Lawrence and can not afford to miss a start. But he may be forced to ride cautiously before the series takes a break next weekend.

Heat Two featured the people’s favorite as Aaron Plessinger(7) grabbed the holeshot and established an early three-and-a-half-second lead. Hunter Lawrence(96) finally got a good start at the beginning of a moto and held second place briefly until Ken Anderson(21) and Eli Tomac(3) moved past. Cooper Webb(2) ran in the fifth place.

But it was all Plessinger holding off all challengers for the Heat win.

Kitchen raced away from all riders taking the holeshot uncontested. Carson Mumford(41) was the only rider able to hang close to the leader as Kitchen quickly separated himself from the rest of the field. Mitchell Oldenburg(55) held the third spot with a big cushion on the remainder of the field.

With Kitchen taking care of business in Heat One, it was up to Smith to get his job done in Heat Two. Unfortunately, Smith got a poor start and crossed the line in ninth place.

Nate Thrasher(57) took the early lead, and Smith was able to recover quickly to move into the second spot. Thrasher came up short on a jump in one of the rhythm sections on the track. He went head-first over the handlebars and landed hard on his back, forcing race officials to display the red flag and bring the event to a halt to attend to Thrasher’s injuries.

So it is back to the gates for a complete restart. This time Smith rode away with a much better start. Jo Shimoda(30) sat second, with RJ Hampshire(24) moving into the third slot. As expected, we will see the point’s leaders fight it out for the series red plate in the 250 Main Event.

Nate Thrasher was transported to a local medical facility for treatment and will not be able to make the gate for the 250CC Last Chance Qualifier.

The fans got what they came for. Levi Kitchen and Jordan Smith ran 1-2 out of the gate and across the holeshot line. Kitchen looked in control but could to pull away from his main contender.

Smith made an early run and passed Kitchen, only to fall back a corner later. RJ Hampshire moved into third to watch the battle shaping up in front of him. Smith made another pass and, this time, was able to make it stick. Hampshire also passed Kitchen, and then disaster struck. Smith went down, coming out of the sand section, giving the lead to Hampshire. He went down a second time and dropped back several spots as Hampshire and Kitchen pulled away at the front. Jo Shimoda moved into the third spot and tried to put some pressure on Kitchen.

The top three held their positions as Smith was able to fight back to the fourth spot. However, it will be Kitchen leaving Glendale with the red plate. Smith is four markers back, and Hampshire entered the tight race for the top spot trailing by five points.

450SX Main Event

Ken Roczen outran Aaron Plessinger for the early lead. Ken Anderson and Eli Tomac sat third and fourth. Jett Lawrence got a bad start and sat 11th early. Sexton was down at the bottom of the top ten as Roczen established a solid lead up front.

Plessinger went down on a slippery portion of the track, falling back to the 18th position. Out front, Roczen had a three-second lead over Anderson five minutes into the moto. Tomac, Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, Cooper Webb, and Chase Sexton followed.

At the halfway point of the time portion of the race, Roczen increased his lead by a half second over Anderson. Tomac held the final podium position in third. Dylan Ferrandis moved up to sixth behind both Lawrence brothers, with Sexton stuck in seventh.

Jett Lawrence, running in fourth will be the new points leader if positions hold. Plessinger recovered to 11th and has a good chance to enter the top ten by race end.

With five minutes remaining, Plessinger recovered to the 10th position. Jett Lawrence passed Eli Tomac for the final podium spot and extended his points lead to four points over Sexton. Roczen had grown his advantage to five seconds over Anderson.

Cooper Webb ran down Sexton and helped Lawrence grow his lead by another point. Roczen became the fifth different winner in six events this year in the 450SX class.
