NASCAR Racing Experience Adds Thrills to Daytona Speedway Visit

Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL — February 20, 2024

Another Daytona 500 is in the books. Despite bouts of inclement weather, the days leading up to “The Great American Race” were a beehive of activity. Practice, qualifying, the  Bluegreen Vacations Duels, the ARCA race, and the NASCAR Craftsman Series Truck race kept fans entertained until Mother Nature interfered with the schedule on Saturday and Sunday.

The sound of race cars circling the track was constant all week. Between the events before the 500, the track never went cold. The NASCAR Racing Experience filled the open hours with the roar of engines and the shrieks of delighted fans getting the ultimate thrill of being in a race car circling Daytona International Speedway.

Sitting at home and watching the broadcast of a NASCAR event, fans are treated to in-car views that bring the action right into their living rooms. Reactions differ but generally fall under a few descriptive phrases. No Way, those guys are nuts! I wonder what that must be like. That sure looks like fun. I wish I could try that. Given the chance, I could do that!

Ok, let’s put on a uniform, climb into a car, and give it a go.

NASCAR Racing Experience

“It’s as real as it gets” is how the NASCAR Racing Experience website describes it. “DRIVE a real NASCAR Race Car by yourself! Following a Drivers Meeting with training and instruction, get behind the wheel and drive a NASCAR Race Car for timed racing sessions on the Nation’s Premier Speedways.”

“There’s no lead car to follow, and no instructor rides with you as you drive 5 to 48 minutes of track time. Get one-on-one instruction from a spotter over 2-way In-Car Radio. In between every 8-minute session, get a brief pit stop and head back out to work on driving faster speeds. Pass the slower cars as you catch them… YES, passing is allowed!”

There is even an opportunity for the timid fan to experience the rush. “Get a NASCAR Ride for you or give a NASCAR Ride to your race fan. Sit back and hold on tight as you ride shotgun in the passenger seat with a professional instructor driving in this fast-speed ride along on the nation’s premier speedways.”

A Must for the Bucket List

If you are a stock car racing fan, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is a must-entry on your bucket list. Combining it with a ticket to the Daytona 500 makes it more special.

Scott and Tammy Hume came to Daytona from Niagara Falls, Ontario, to attend their first “in-person” Daytona 500. They brought almost the whole family with them to share the experience. Already living that dream, they decided to double down and make the trip truly unforgettable by signing up for the NASCAR Racing Experience. The most frequently used descriptive of the exploit was “awesome.”

Tammy chose the ride-along experience. With a professional driver behind the wheel, she was strapped into the car in a racing seat installed on the passenger side for some laps at 170+ mph. Although the seat held her tightly in place. The sense of gravity and inertia made her grasp the roll bar as they hurtled off into the corner. “I was shocked at how close we came to the wall,” Tammy said, “and it was thrilling to pass other cars on the track as we approached them at such a fast speed.” “It was Awesome.” Would you do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat.

Scott drove and related a slightly different version of what it felt like. “When you head off into the corners, the car is so well set up that it feels like it knows the way. The sensation of being sucked down into the seat and becoming a part of the machine is remarkable. I kept hitting the rev-limiter. I was so comfortable, I wanted to go faster.”

“The only shock was the speed at which the cars with professional drivers blew past.” Would you do it again? “I’m ready to go right now. It was ‘awesome,’ the people were great, and I enjoyed it immensely.

A Family Activity

Scott’s sons drove, his son-in-law took a turn, and even his daughter Terri got behind the wheel. Terri came away with bragging rights as the fastest driver of the group. She described her method. “The rev limiter was set at 5,000 rpm; if you stayed just off of it, they would allow you to increase your speed. We were told to stay five feet off the double yellow line at the bottom of the track and to stay in the center down the back superstretch.”

Were you ever anxious or felt you might lose control? “Never. The steering was easy and precise; I was comfortable behind the wheel even when the speed increased. It felt as if I was stuck to the track. It was just so awesome.”

Sometimes, you can tell how someone feels about an experience by the look on their face. Did you see any frowns in those pictures? Enough said!
