TPC at Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL — March 15, 2024
Wyndham Clark opened the Players Championship on Thursday by shooting a 7-under-par score of 65. On Day Two, he opened the lead on his competitors by posting another 65 to go 4-shots up on Xander Schauffele and Nick Taylor, who are tied for second at 10 under par.
Schauffele, who was tied after Day One with Clark, only managed one birdie on the front nine. Two birdies and an eagle on the back side were sandwiched around a double bogey on the par five 11th hole to give him a second-round score of 69.
The other first-round leader, Rory McIlroy, who posted a controversial 65 on Day One, ballooned to a second-round score of 73. McIlroy dropped to 6-under-par in a tie for 14th place and now trails Clark by 8 strokes.
Defending champion and world #1 Scottie Scheffler shot 69 and is tied for sixth at 8-under-par, six strokes off the lead.
To survive the cut, players had to score in red numbers. Those who shot even-par and greater were sent home for the weekend. Some well-known names that missed the cut included Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Rose
