Scottie Scheffler Runs Away with the 2024 Masters

Over the years, the final day at the Masters has produced incredible drama. Will the 88th edition of the tournament add to that history? It has all the potential to do so.

Realistically, if we see something truly spectacular, it will come out of the final four twosomes that tee off this afternoon. With eight players sitting within five strokes of the lead, it will likely take a fast start by someone to put pressure on the leader, Scottie Scheffler.

Of the early starters on the day, only Tom Kim made any noise. However, his six-under-par 66 was muted by the fact that he started the final round 11 over par.

Ludvig Aberg, playing in his first Masters, carded three birdies on the front nine to tie for the lead. Scottie Scheffler made a birdie on the par-four fourth hole to push his score to eight under. However, he gave the stroke back on the next hole with a bogey on the long par three.

Finally, some real drama. Scheffler bogeyed the par-four seventh hole to move back toward the field. Then, three birdies in a row on eight, nine, and ten separated Scheffler from the remainder of the field.

A slight bobble with a bogey on 11 was rectified with three more birdies on the 13th, 14th, and 16th holes. Scheffler’s final score of 11 under par gave him his second green jacket in the last three years.

Were it not for a double bogey six on the par four 11th, Aberg might have made a run at the world’s number-one-ranked player. He erased those two strokes with birdies on 13 and 14. But he could never get past the seven-under score that Scheffler started his day with. A four-stroke lead on the final nine at Augusta is not always safe. With Scheffler, it was money in the bank.

Max Homa also reached seven under par. A double bogey on the tricky par three 12th. A bogey on 17 left him at four under, a stroke back from where he started his round.

Tommy Fleetwood’s bogey-free round of three under brought him into a tie for third with Homa at four under. Collin Morikawa dropped two strokes to par on his round to join the tie for third, also at four under.

Last year’s Masters Champion finished 45th at nine over par.

Tiger Woods improved on his Saturday score of 82 by shooting 77 on Sunday. In a sad commentary for the former five-time Masters Champion, Tiger finished dead last, in 60th place.
