Plum Hollow Country Club, Southfield, MI — June 10, 2024

The 108th Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship teed it up today at the Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield. A total of 82 of the best women golfers in Michigan registered to compete in this year’s event.

Day One and Day Two are contested via stroke play. The field is then narrowed to 32 golfers who compete in match play format. Essentially the remainder of the field misses the cut. Should ties exist for the 32nd position, a sudden-death playoff is held immediately after all scores are posted to determine who advances.

The 16 matches are contested on Wednesday, June 12th. On Thursday morning, the 16 remaining golfers are trimmed to 8, and the afternoon round will pair the field to 4 golfers.

Semifinals are Friday morning and the Championship round will tee off Friday afternoon.

If any match is tied after 18 holes, it will continue until a winner is determined.

Results of Round One

Three golfers are tied for the lead after round one at three over par. Positions 4 through 32 have 3 golfers tied for 31st at 10 over par. Seven strokes is a narrow margin to fit into. A blow-up on a single hole could cause a player to fall out of that bracket. A solid round in that range could lock down a position to advance.

Monday on the course was cool and windy. Not ideal playing conditions and the scores reflected that. Warmer weather and calmer winds are forecast for Tuesday. With the experience of playing the course locked into memory, better playing conditions should produce lower scoring.

Kate Brody

If you follow The Lasco Press, you likely know Kate Brody. We have reported on her accomplishments as the two-time Michigan High School Women’s State Golf Champion at Grand Blanc High School. She is currently continuing her amateur career as a member of the University of Wisconsin Women’s Golf Team.

We were anxious to see how Kate would respond to the challenge of the combination of stroke and match play against a broader field with a mix of school-age and post-college players. The youngest competitor this week is 15, and the oldest is 62.

Plum Hollow is a beautiful golf course. However, under the beauty lies the teeth of a tiger ready to rip your heart out.

Kate started her round early, striding to the first tee at 9:30 am.

After the third hole, she was two under par with birdies on the first and third holes.

The fourth and fifth holes brought her back to the field as two three-put greens resulted in back-to-back bogeys. A par on the sixth hole was a much-needed stop to the scoring slide.

The course bit back on the par four seventh hole. Her approach to the green landed in the right front bunker up against a steep slope. Her blast failed to escape the trap but provided a better lie. Out and two putts totaled a double bogey six and a total of two-over-par with two holes to play on the front nine.

Kate curled in a birdie putt on the eighth green. But a three-putt on the ninth left her with a two-over-par 37 on the front nine.

Two pars to start the second nine left her in a great position. She scrambled out of the rough on both holes to get the even numbers. Par was a good score given the conditions and most golfers on the course struggled to make them.

Kate’s second shot on the 12th hole came up just short of the green. However, her golf ball’s position forced her to stand in the greenside bunker to chip on. The difficult stance popped the shot up and past the hole. The tough downhill putt rolled past the cup and resulted in a bogey on the hole. Three over par.

The 13th went from a birdie potential to a double bogey with a four-putt green. A par on the par-three 14th settled the nerves. As she often does, Kate responded to adversity with a birdie on 15. Hitting her approach shot to a foot from the pin.

Holes 16, 17, and 18 were not the way Kate hoped to finish her round. Three bogeys with missed opportunities around the green gave her a total for the day of 77, seven strokes over par.

We asked Kate how she felt about the round, and it was easy to tell she was disappointed. “I got off to a good start, but some bad chips hurt, and I missed some putts that I should have made. Overall, it was OK; we will come back tomorrow and see if we can turn in a better round.”

Okay, without the three bogeys to close out her round, Kate would have finished the day tied for fourth, a stroke out of the lead. But strokes will mean nothing after tomorrow, and she is currently tied for 16th, right in the middle of the 32-player pack. The low stroke total after Round Two will not produce a trophy. Finishing in 32nd or better will give her a shot at one.

The fire that burns inside a champion can overheat and burn out. Or it can simmer and ignite the adrenaline pump that drives one to success. Can’t wait to see how Kate responds tomorrow.
