Some people love them. Some people hate them. One thing is for sure: they are not likely to go away. We are talking about those self-scan cash registers in the checkout lines. Your local Walmart stores are taking the technology up a notch. The process could mean easier and quicker scanning while reducing retailer merchandise theft.
Apparently, one of the scams thieves use to rip off stores is to take their selections through the self-checkout lanes. They legitimately scan some inexpensive items, then waive the more pricey products in front of the scanner without the code on the label being exposed. Then the stolen goods are slipped into the bag and out the door they go. The action appears normal on camera or under the gaze of monitors and is difficult to detect.
Digimarc to the Rescue
Digimarc is a technology company that Walmart has used for years in different capacities. A new inovation is being rolled out at the mega-retailer that uses a Digimarc product called “Digital Watermarks.” According to their website “Digimarc uniquely addresses the challenges many businesses face today by identifying and authenticating physical and digital items where other methods fail. Digimarc digital watermarks can be seamlessly integrated into a wide range of physical and digital items, including but not limited to product packaging, labels, gift cards, government documents, industrial parts, digital assets, and more.”

The advantage to consumers is the technology makes scanning speedier and less of a hassle. No more searching for the scan code, having to straighten the package to make sure it reads properly, and no more accidental missed scans. For intended thieves, their deceptions are made harder to accomplish.
So, lovers or haters, anything that improves the process has to be seen as a positive step.
