Washougal MX Park, Washougal, WA — July 19, 2025

Round Eight of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship visits Washougal, Washington, about 20 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon. The track runs in and out of the forest land that the northwest is known for. “The lush atmosphere of Washougal MX Park serves as an offset to the track surface, which looks deep and loamy with its rich brown color. However, it is deceptively slick, and it makes this one of the most demanding tracks on the entire schedule.”

Jorge Prado(70) was fast out of the starting gate in the 450MX Moto #1. He edged out Jett Lawrence(18) for the holeshot. However, both riders were surprised by Chase Sexton(1) flying past early to take the lead. Lawrence quickly worked his way around Prado, and Eli Tomac(3) followed.

Prado continued to fade as RJ Hampshire(24), Justin Cooper(32), and Hunter Lawrence(96) moved up to chase the top three riders with 10 minutes gone in the timed portion of the race. As the moto neared the halfway point, Jett closed in on Sexton as the two leaders separated themselves from the rest of the field. But Sexton was able to hold off the first charge from the rider who has won every overall event to date in the Pro Motocross season.

Suddenly Jett lost the rear end traction and went down in a corner, Tomac passed and Sexton pulled away. With 10 minutes to go Sexton led Tomac by six seconds. Lawrence was another 4 seconds behind second place.

Sexton maintained his lead as the clock ticked to zero. Jett Lawrence closed on Tomac as they worked through lapped traffic over the final three laps of the moto. With a second place finish a rider can still win the overall by winning the second moto. But if Lawrence can’t get around Tomac he would lose to Sexton even if he won Moto#2, if Sexton was able to finish second.

The lappers made a big impact on the final laps of the race as Sexton took the win and Tomac was able to keep riders between himself and Lawrence to finish second. Hampshire finished in fourth and Hunter Lawrence in fifth.

With NBC televising the first motos in each class, the 250MX riders hit the track behind the premier class 450MX riders. After losing to Jeremy Martin in the final race of Martin’s career at Spring Creek last week, Haiden Deegan(1) is looking to get back to dominating the riders he has fought with all year on the smaller bikes. Deegan leads Jo Shimoda(30) by 45 points in the standings and just needs to avoid disaster in the three events remaining after Washougal.

Jalek Swoll(22), on the Triumph, grabs the holeshot as he continues to run well in the series. Ryder Difrancesco(25) ran second, Deegan sat in third and Shimoda in fourth.

After leading the first lap, Swoll went down hard after losing traction with the front wheel. Swoll stayed down for an extended period of time with the bike on top of him. The Alpine Safety crew attended to his injuries and helped him off the track. Swoll was able to get back on the bike but not really in shape to continue competitively.

Ryder D. took over the top spot but quickly found himself in a battle with Deegan. As they raced side-by-side over a jump the pair collided just as their bikes were landing. DiFrancesco went down, “Danger Boy” stayed up on his bike and rode off with the lead. Shimoda moved up to second and Dilan Schwartz(44) benefited from the carnage to take over third. Garrett Marchbanks(36) held the fourth spot and Max Vohland ran fifth.

At the halfway point of the moto, Shimoda closed on the leader and hounded Deegan around the track. However, Deegan fought off the challenge and reestablished a lead of five minutes over Shimoda with the clock running down.

A battle developed, behind the top two, between Schwartz and Marchbanks. Schwartz was trying to hold on for his first podium finish. The more experienced Marchbanks made the pass and began to pull away.

Out front Deegan locked up the top spot with Shimoda never getting back close enough to contend for the win.

The Lawrence brothers got the jump at the start, Hunter and Jett going 1-2 across the holeshot line. Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac ran third and fourth. The overall dynamics are adding to the drama. Jett moves to the lead, he can win the overall if Hunter stays ahead of Sexton. Tomac is the wild card, he is not letting the top three get away and could be a factor as the race proceeds.

Sexton gets around Hunter, only for Hunter to recover and pass him back. Again Sexton takes the second spot when racing was interrupted by the red flag for a rider down on the track with 21:22 remaining on the clock.

In a new restart procedure for Pro Motocross, all riders return to the starting gate where they will be released one-by-one. Because they go to the results of the last completed lap Hunter Lawrence will line up ahead of Chase Sexton as they take positions from the inside to the outside of the track.

When racing resumed, Sexton immediately jumped on Hunter and made the pass. Tomac followed Sexton around the older Lawrence brother as Jett pulled away at the front of the field.

At the halfway point Jett’s lead was two seconds over Sexton. Tomac trailed the second place rider by 1.5 seconds. Hunter was falling off the pace.

The interval between the top three varied slightly up and down, but all three still stayed within 3.5 seconds.

As the clock wound down the leaders began working through lapped traffic. Jett had stretched the advantage out front to four seconds. Sexton stretched his lead over Tomac to eight seconds.

Jett Lawrence did what he needed to do posting the win (3-1). However, Sexton also accomplished what was necessary as his second place finish (1-2) gives him the overall title ending the Lawrence season long win streak. Tomac finished third overall (2-3).

The day of upsets continued in the 250MX class. Jo Shimoda jumped to the lead early and rode away from every rider on the track. Haiden Deegan got off to a bad start in the 8th position. By the time Deegan worked his way through the traffic in front of him, Shimoda held a 20 second lead on his nemesis.

Shimoda with a 2-1 overall score just edged Deegan 1-2 based on the result of the second moto. Garrett Marchbanks took the final poosium spot with finishes of 3-4.
