01 The Record
Ford made it official today: the Mustang GTD Competition has set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 6:40.835 — shattering its own previous benchmark by more than 11 seconds and cementing Ford’s position at the top of the American performance record books.
Driven by Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller, the GTD Competition secured the sixth fastest time ever recorded in the Nürburgring Pre-Production and Prototype class — a list that includes some of the most extreme track weapons ever built. This is not a production car lap record. This is an all-time lap record against prototypes and hypercars.
With this achievement, Ford now claims the two fastest Nürburgring times ever set by an American brand — the GTD Competition at 6:40.835 and the Ford GT Mk IV at 6:15.977, set just two weeks ago. No American manufacturer has ever dominated the Nordschleife like this.

To shave more than 11 seconds off an already world-class benchmark, Ford’s engineering team focused relentlessly on four areas. The result is a car that looks like a Mustang GTD but performs in an entirely different stratosphere.

Ford’s engineers targeted every kilogram and every horsepower to build the fastest street-legal Mustang ever assembled.
- More Power — Supercharged 5.2L V8 pushed beyond the original 815 hp through hardware updates and aggressive tuning
- Advanced Aerodynamics — Rear wing mods, secondary front dive planes, and carbon fiber aero discs added downforce without sacrificing aero balance
- Increased Grip — New high-performance tires developed specifically for the Competition
- Weight Reduction — Magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, lighter damper system, and additional mass reduction throughout
04 The Engineer Who Ran Faster Than the Old Record
Müller’s 6:40.835 is the headline, but the story that may be even more remarkable belongs to Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson.
Thompson — who has driven the Nürburgring fewer than 40 cumulative laps in his career — also piloted the GTD Competition to a time of 6:49.337. To put that in context: that time is faster than Müller’s original Mustang GTD record from the previous session. An engineer, not a professional racing driver, lapped the most demanding race circuit in the world faster than the car’s own record lap.

The GTD Competition won’t be a regular production model. Ford confirmed it will only be offered as a limited, serialized, street-legal special edition available in strictly controlled quantities.
