You might add to that definition that Fathom is a strange, but interesting, name for an automobile.
In that context: Fathom is the name of Ford’s new midsize electric truck — from the engineering to its name — came from one place: a deep understanding of the person who would drive it.

The Ford Fathom™ EV is an all‑new electric lifestyle truck with next‑generation BlueCruise capability, bidirectional power capability, easy‑to‑use navigation powered by Apple Maps, and is projected to have more passenger volume than the Toyota RAV4. All starting at MSRP $28,350. Preorders begin early 2027.
A Brand-New Platform:
Fathom is the first vehicle produced on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. This is not an electrified version of an existing truck — it is a clean-sheet architecture Ford intends to build on going forward.
The Price — Starting At $28,350:
That is the published starting MSRP for the standard-range battery, before destination and delivery, taxes, title, license, and dealer fees. It puts Fathom squarely in the heart of the affordable EV market.
Ford has stated every Fathom will be BlueCruise capable for hands-free highway driving. Next-generation capability, activation and subscription terms to be announced.
Apple Maps Built In:
A large touchscreen display with navigation powered by Apple Maps. Ford says road-level map data will feed its BlueCruise development.
Bidirectional Capable:
Ford has confirmed bidirectional power capability. Specific output ratings and home-integration hardware requirements have not been published.
Digital Key & Phone Mirroring:
Digital Key, Ford app remote control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are all standard equipment.
Projected Above RAV4:
Ford projects Fathom will have more passenger volume than the Toyota RAV4. Final measured figures have not been released.

What does the Ford Fathom look like?
When we know, you will know. Ford has promised a full reveal by the end of 2026.
When will preorders open?
Not until early 2027. However you can get your name on the list to be notified as soon as the ordering window opens.

Dealer allocations are based on dealer volume. When Ford opens Fathom preorders in early 2027, dealers receive a limited first-wave allotment and the customers who already raised their hands are the ones who get matched to it.
